Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors are granted the option to contest particular decisions made by the official, following the practice already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
