An individual who laced treats with sleeping medication and distributed them to youngsters at a summer camp in Leicestershire has confessed to sexual crimes against two young males aged nine and 10.

The accused was taken into custody after eight youngsters and an older person fell ill at Stathern Lodge in July.

The elderly man, from that region, confessed to a multiple criminal counts when he was present at the courthouse on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he refused to admit one of the sexual offences he was charged with, which was concerning a nine-year-old child.

The accused was remanded in custody prior to a further hearing on November 28th.

'Treat game'

Mary Prior KC, presenting evidence, detailed the defendant's actions to the judicial body.

She stated his targets were under-privileged children who were participating in a youth camp which he ran.

Ruben played a "candy game" with the children, the prosecutor stated, in which he would go into the children's bedrooms when they were settling down and ask them to eat sweets "as fast as possible".

She stated to the judge the man had engaged in this activity with the boys "repeatedly", and youngsters had previously become sick the next day.

She said the man had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his family member had suspicions in July 2025.

The prosecutor stated further: "In the summer" his family member had concerns about what was going on, with valid cause.

"They decided to investigate in the individual's items."

Mrs Prior KC said materials including baby oil, ointment and injection devices were found, and his family member alerted the authorities about his worries.

She stated the defendant proceeded to conduct the "treat game" with six boys that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were all sick the subsequent day.

"The police had not arrived by that stage," she stated further.

The regulatory agency, the investigative body, had stated that it was examining the police response of the situation.

The prosecutor explained the youngsters were having difficulty walking due to being ill, so the stepson contacted the law enforcement a second time.

She stated the defendant then conducted the "candy game" in a area of five children.
