A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.
Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.
Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.
Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.
The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.
In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.
Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.
Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.
Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.
A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.
The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.
The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.
“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
